Anderlecht began the defence of their Belgian Pro League title with a 1-0 win over Beerschot on Saturday night.
Defending champions Anderlecht hosted Beerschot as the second round of the new Belgium Pro League season continued on Saturday.
Brazilian striker Kanu opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he volleyed home a delicate lobbed pass from Milan Jovanovic into the penalty area.
In the 35th minute the home team almost made it 2-0, but Beerschot's goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen scrambled to tip a looping header over the cross bar
Anderlecht continued their dominance after half time but couldn't find the second goal, Dennis Odoi driving wide from the edge of the penalty.
With Beerschot completely outclassed the reigning Belgian champions created chance after chance, Kanu going close as his header crashed against the crossbar eight minutes from full time.
It seemed like that allusive second goal would finally come for the champions when Kanu was brought down in the penalty area, but Guillaume Gillet hit the upright from the spot.
Despite their failure to score a second Anderlecht secure their first win of the new season with this 1-0 success
