USA ready for Aussie semi-final

Thursday, August 09 2012 by SNTV
  • Intro:

USA women expect physical basketball semi-final against Australia.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sue Bird, USA Guard (on the intensity of a semi-final game rather than a gold medal game)

"A semi-final game, by losing that there is actually a chance, or an opportunity that you might not get a medal at all. So there is definitely a uniqueness about a semi-final game different from a final game, so I expect there to be more of an edge. And to be honest some of the semi-finals I've been in have been harder than the gold medal games."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Gino Auriemma, USA Women's Basketball Team Head Coach (on playing Australia in the semi-final)

"It's all about comfort here. It's about us making them uncomfortable and they are going to make us uncomfortable, believe me. You know, they punch you, they grab you, they are really, really, they are the most physical team in the tournament, no question about it. You know those Aussies, they're a tough bunch."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Angel McCoughtry, USA Forward (on not being complacent)

"No, I mean that word doesn't exist when it comes to the Olympics. You know what I mean. That word, you don't even say complacent. There is no such thing. Even if we are up 50 points we're still going to play as hard as if we're down. You can't be complacent in the Olympics. There is a gold medal at stake. You are representing your country, you're not just representing yourselves, you are representing your country, so the word complacent, it doesn't exist."
