It was 'mollusc mayhem' in the English village of Congham on Saturday, with the staging of the 2012 Snail Racing World Championships in the grounds of the local cricket club.
Hundreds of enthusiasts from aroud the county gathered for what's been described as the 'blue ribband' event on the snail racing calendar, postponed from earlier in the year because of unseasonal rain in June.
Those humans taking part could bring their own specially-trained snails, or compete with one provided by the organisers.
Each were numbered with an adhesive label and put through a series of heats.
The action was frenetic as more than 150 snails slugged it out - some trying to hitch a ride on another member of their species.
This isn't considered cheating - it's every snail for themselves in this sport.
Neil Riseborough, event organiser admits that its not a precise sport.
"It's really difficult to say... to pinpoint any specific quality in any snail... I think every snail is unique in its own special way. I think what makes it so exciting is that on the day anthing can happen. You can have a snail that you can train and make it do two and-a-half minutes in a reace and on the day it'll do three and-a-half, you just don't know. There's no... nothing. There's no rules and there's no nothing and I think that's what makes it so damn exciting."
The grand final pitched the nine best racers of the day against one another in a 'winner takes all' slug fest and number 93, a private entry from a five year-old girl from King's Lynn named Sue, emerged the victor.
The winner, called 'Racer', crossed the critical 'outer red ring' in three minutes and 20 seconds - considered to be an average time in snail racing circles.
Legendary former champion 'Archie', who won the title back in 1995, clocked a sizzling 2:09, a record that has stood since.
Racer was reunited with Sue after the race and relaxed in a plastic container with a lettuce leaf as the prize giving ceremony was prepared.
"Well, it's wonderful, it's ecstatic. You feel you should have a special place in the garden for her now. We might put her in the fairy garden that we've created as well and you know, we definitely will look after this one and make sure daddy doesn't eat it."
Sue was duly presented with the trophy, which was stuffed with leaves - presumably 'Rocket' - and Racer was placed gently on top as both were proclaimed as the 2012 world champions.
