    Chinese twice Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan returned to badminton court action at the World Championships in Guangzhou on Monday (5 August), completing a 21-6, 21-9 win over Sattawat Pongnairat.

    Double Olympic champion Lin Dan returned to the court on Monday for the first time since winning gold at London 2012 as he opened his BWF campaign.

    Lin has was rarely tested in his opening encounter as he cruised to a straight games victory 21-6, 21-9.

    Lin's second-seeded team-mate, Chen Long, also eased into the second round on Monday, brushing aside Austria's Luka Wraber 21-3, 21-5.

    Germany's women's doubles pair of Johanna Goliszewski and Birgit Michels also moved into the next round after dispatching their opponents

    The pair then beat Chan and Chou 21-14, 21-13 to progress.

    There was controversy in the mixed doubles match between China's Tao Jiaming and Tang Jinhua and Malaysians Tan Aik Quan and Lai Pei Jing, with the Malaysian duo claiming the umpire missed a point that was awarded to the Chinese pair at 19-19.

    Tao and Tang eventually cruised through the second game to advance 21-19, 21-7.

    Elsewhere eighth-seeded Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto claimed a hard fought three game win over Denmarks's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-18, 15-21, 21-17.
