China's top-ranked badminton mixed doubles team of Xu Chen and Ma Jin got all they could handle from Denmark's Mads Pieler Kolding and Kamilla Rytter Juhl in their opening BWF World Championships match on Tuesday, with the Chinese pair dropping the first game 21-18.

But the London Olympic silver medallists won the second game to level the match at 1-1, and then gained the upper hand in a tight third game when Xu blasted a smash past the outstretched Kolding to make it 13-12.

Xu and Ma dominated after that, winning eight of the next nine points to grind out an 18-21, 21-17, 21-13 victory.

Fifth-seeded Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia were not be so lucky in their opening match against South Korea's Kim Ki-jung and Jung Kyung-eun.

The unheralded Koreans upset the Malaysian pair 21-18, 21-19.

Things went to form in the next mixed doubles match as Thailand's seventh-seeded duo, Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam, cruised past New Zealand siblings Oliver and Susannah Leydon-Davis in straight games, 21-8, 21-11.

In the last match on the main court on Tuesday, defending mixed doubles world champions Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei of China swept aside the Swiss pair of Anthony Dumartheray and Sabrina Jaquet 21-11, 21-15.
