First honours of the 2013 Americas Cup went to Emirates Team New Zealand who won both races on Saturday (7 September).

    Script:

The America's Cup, the oldest trophu in international sport, got underway in San Francisco Bay on Saturday.

The 34th edition of the race saw challengers Emirates Team New Zealand take on the holders, Oracle Team USA.

The first race proved to be extremely tight with both skipper determined to make a strong start to their campaign.

But Team New Zealand - skippered by the hugely experienced Dean Barker - took the lead in the final leg of the race and went on to win by 36 seconds.

The challengers carried that momentum into the second race of the day as they led from start to finish.

Their task was made considerably easier when Oracle Team USA's bow plunged into the bay at the second marker.

Emirates won the second race by an emphatic 52 seconds to consolidate their early advantage over the holders.

Oracle's disastrous start to the defence of their title was compounded when they were docked two points for making illegal modifications.

The points penalty means that Oracle now require 11 wins in the best-of-17 race series.

Races two and three take place on Sunday
