A maiden DTM championship was within reach of Mike Rockenfeller heading into Sunday's ninth race of the season in Zandvoort, the Netherlands.

The German started the penultimate race of 2013 with a 33-point lead over Augusto Farfus, which meant a second place finish would give him an unassailable lead over his Brazilian rival.

Marco Wittmann started from pole position, but Farfus made the better get away from second place on the grid and forced his way into the lead.

Germany's Wittmann held off Rockenfeller through the first set of corners, but the champion elect forced his way into second place before the end of lap one.

Farfus built a handy lead and was still two seconds ahead of Rockenfeller on exiting the pit-lane following his first change of tyres.

The field came together behind the safety car late in the race after Jamie Green and Dirk Werner collided.

Farfus retained first place on the re-start though and pulled away over the remaining two laps to secure his second win of the season in one hour, 13 minutes and 26.294 seconds.

Rockenfeller followed the BMW driver home 1.603 seconds in arrears, wrapping up second place and the season's honours.
