Schumacher specialist unsure of recovery chances

  • Intro:

Professor Gerard Saillant -- who is caring for Michael Schumacher at Grenoble University Hospital -- said on Tuesday he is unable to speculate about the seven time Formula 1 World Champion's chances of recovering from his skiing accident. The 44-year-old had a scan on his head injury this morning after he hit his head on a rock on Sunday morning. Prof Saillant said he is a friend of the German -- known as 'Schumi' -- and is an expert in brain and spine injury. He oversaw Schumacher's medical care when the driver broke his leg in the 1999 British GP.

    SOUNDBITE: (French), Professor Gerard Saillant:
"We are not, like yesterday, well rid of the worry and the preoccupation we had. We can't say that it is won -- it is necessary to say that there are highs and the lows, and that it is a bit better than yesterday, that 24 hours later it is a bit better than the start. But it is necessary to stay realistic and all the family are very aware of his state and very sensitive to all that has been done."

    SOUNDBITE: (French), Professor Gerard Saillant:
"It is impossible on our behalf or your behalf to draw plans for the future. What will be the prognosis tomorrow, what will be the prognosis in six months, what will be the prognosis in two years? It's stupid to speak of this. I think that we are here to talk about the things that have happened but we can't speculate about the future. It is very important and we ask not to forecast plans in this sense."
