The fourth leg of the 2014 edition of the Marathon des Sables got underway on Thursday.

The 938 competitors remaining in the event, started out in Ba Hallou and were to make their way to Rich Merzoug - a total distance of 81.5 kilometres.

Shortly after the start, the ascent of the El Otfal djebel loomed ahead of the runners, with a challenging gradient of up to 30 percent.

The views were spectacular once the competitors reached the top, but there was still plenty of ground to be covered.

Frontrunners including overall leader Rachid El Morabity of Morocco, and French runner Laurence Klein, set out three hours after the main group.

They were expected to cover the gruelling distance in under 10 hours, while many of the others will have to run through the night to complete the stage guided simply by head torches and stars.
