Known as the toughest foot race on Earth, the Marathon des Sables produced its latest winners on Friday.

The final stage in the 2014 ultra-marathon spanned 42.2 kilometres.

Moroccan Rachid El Morabity had a fairly sizeable lead in the men's race at the start line. And he wasn't to be overhauled.

Fellow countryman Abdelkader El Mouaziz took the stage win in three hours, 11 minutes and 22 seconds.

Great Britain's Danny Kendall finished second, just over 11 minutes back, with Portugal's Carlos Sa in third.

El Morabity was fifth, with Salameh Al Aqra of Jordan the next competitor to complete the final, gruelling leg.

The women's event was won by an American - Nikki Kimball.

She came in third behind Claire Morrissey of Ireland and Amandine Roux, but took race honours ahead of Roux's French compatriot Laurence Klein by an hour and a half.
