A Jamaican disciplinary panel on Thursday banned former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell from athletics for 18 months after the veteran sprinter tested positive for a banned stimulant last June.

The head of the three-member panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission said its decision was unanimous.

On Thursday, commission chairman Lennox Gayle, said the panel would issue a written statement explaining its decision in about a month.

Powell's backdated ban begins from the date of his sample collection on June 21, 2013 during national trials for the world championships.

That means he is eligible to return to competition on December 20th, about a month after he turns 32.

Powell's attorney Kwame Gordon explained his disappointment with the outcome:

SOUNDBITE (English) Kwame Gordon, Asafa Powell's Attorney:

"We think it's incorrect. And secondly we are very disappointed that they didn't provide us with written reasons. They (Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission) had two months to prepare and a proper judgement that we could see their reasoning and they haven't done so."

The 31-year-old sprinter has been suspended from competition since his doping case was disclosed in July.
