  • Intro:

Carolina Marin produced one of the most stunning performances in the history of badminton's World Championships by defeating Li Xuerui - the top seed, world number one and Olympic champion - in the final of the women's singles on Sunday (August 31).

China's Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei lifted the women's doubles world title in Copenhagen on Sunday (August 31) after a 21-19, 21-15 victory over compatriots Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang.

    Script:

A heavyweight clash for the World doubles title. Fourth seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang - the double world champions - against the Olympic champions, Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei ...

The Olympic Champions seeded 5th, took the first game 21-19.

Zhao after winning mixed doubles gold at the London Olympics finished off the match 21-15 in the second for the title.

Carolina Marin was the first Spaniard to win the European title, however this was a step up in class for the World women's title.

And she lost the first set 17-21 to Li Xuerui.

But the ninth seed and world number ten clawed her way back, Marin took that game 21-17 .

Li held a narrow advantage for much of the third - but approaching the climax she started to struggle.

In what was already been described by the badminton press as the greatest upset in the history of the competition, Marin now became the first Spaniard to win a world title, courtesy of the 17-21, 21-17, 21-18 scoreline.

And before that, an all-South Korean clash in the men's doubles went the way of Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Choel.

Seeded 12th - Hyun & Choel defeated Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong the second seeds.

22-20, 12-21, 21-18 was the outcome - and a third World Championship silver for Lee, the South Korean still goes in search for that ever so close gold medal.
