Strong winds continued at the Sailing World Championships on Friday as the top qualifying windsurfers lined up for the RS:X Medal Races.

Greece's Byron Kokkalanis and French duo Louis Giard and Pierre Le Coq were disqualified for having started the race too early.

So, overnight leader Julien Bontemps looked assured of the gold medal.

His French compatriot Thomas Goyard won the race - an outstanding achievement considering his best result ahead of the World Championships was sixth place at the European Championship.

Bontemps held his nerve to finish second, which was enough to seal his second world title.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Julien Bontemps, gold medal winner:

"It was not so easy, it was a long week, light winds at the beginning of the week, medium, strong winds, a long way sometimes from the beach and finally I won, so amazing for me."

Charline Picon of France had already made sure of gold but she continued to take risks.

Whilst others encountered difficulties, Picon's attacking tactics and speed saw her win the race and the championship in style.
