Martinez on struggling to win ahead of Stoke

Wednesday, March 04 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Everton manager Roberto Martinez refused to blame Romelu Lukaku for their poor recent goalscoring form in the English Premier League and said on Tuesday, "All that responsibility is for the full team, it's not just one striker or the players that are in the striking positions", on the eve of the trip to Stoke City.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager (Q: One win from eleven Premier League games must be concerning for you?):

"We've got a really strong squad, yes we're not getting the results that we all want, but I think what we've got now is a great opportunity to go into the eleven games we've got left in the league and create real momentum and see how well we can do and how many points we can get and that is the focus, not in terms of trying to highlight any sort of stats, because stats can be used any way you want."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager (Q: Only three league goals in the last six games, is there a reliance on Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Miralles, do you need to change anything there or get more support there?):

"No I think obviously scoring goals is important to win games, but in the same manner all that responsibility is for the full team, it's not just one striker or the players that are in the striking positions, it's being able to give the service, it's being able to contribute from all over the pitch, the same way that the defensive duties rely on everyone in the team. Looking at obviously domestically in the last nine games we only lost two and those two games was away at Arsenal and in a very, very sad manner in the last minute against the league leaders (Chelsea). So the margins are very, very small, we're not talking about a team that doesn't perform well, that doesn't have confidence, we feel that we are getting very, very close to reaching momentum in the league and that's what we are chasing. The margins are small and we need to make sure that we affect them."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager (Q: What are you expecting from Stoke City?):

"It's always tough to go to the Britannia Stadium, they use that to their advantage really well, but I do expect this Stoke side to be very competitive. I think they are a side that can be very effective, but they are trying to get on the ball as well, they want to control games and it's going to be a really, tough, tough game. But I don't think Stoke are such a different side at home, than they are away, I think they are a team that are starting to be capable of getting results anywhere they go, obviously that would probably explain the position they have in the table."
