Phelps wins 100m butterfly on return

Saturday, April 18 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Michael Phelps has won the 100 metre butterfly at his first meet in eight months.

    Script:

Michael Phelps is back on the starting block... and back winning races.

This was the 18- time Olympic champion's first meet in 8 months. The 100m butterfly and his longtime rival Ryan Lochte was in the next lane.

Phelps led at the halfway mark and went on to touch first in 52.38 seconds.

His time was slower than a year ago, when he finished second to Lochte in 52.13.

But he edged his former USA teammate this time.

Phelps is back competing after serving a six-month suspension from USA Swimming after his second drunken driving arrest.

And he still thinks there is room for improvement.

    SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Phelps:

"I am always hard on myself. But just being the first race back it's ok. There's probably some things to fix on but as a start it's probably a good starting point. Bob and I have been working probably harder in training than we have been in a long time so I am looking forward... There's more to come."
