England's Root on being dropped from 2013-14 Ashes

  • Intro:

Reaction from West Indies' Kraigg Braithwaite and England's Joe Root following the fourth day's play in the second Test match at Grenada.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on being dropped in the Ashes tour of 2013-14)

"I think that really. Knowing what it feels like to not play and if you get the opportunity, you've got to go on and make big scores. It's something that, from that day watching the guys who have been successful, it's something I've wanted to work on and every time I've got given an opportunity to try and take it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on James Anderson's run out to end the England innings)

"There was a bit of confusion actually. I thought I had sold another one of my mates down the river. So I was obviously quite upset that we'd worked really hard to build a good partnership and I'd run him out but then, get into the dressing room and saw that he'd forgotten to run his bat in. So he was obviously annoyed at that and then we were actually sat next to each other in the dressing room which was quite funny as well. It's part of the game and luckily we came straight back out and managed to get a wicket which is always nice in that little 20-minute period. Unfortunately, it's a very unresponsive pitch and it's been hard work since then."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on game prospects)

"We're going to need a very good first hour tomorrow morning, I think, with the new ball five overs away or so. We need a couple of early wickets and, you never know, they're only 40 I think ahead so, as they say, 'bang, bang' in the morning and we've got a game on our hands."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on game prospects)

Q - Do you think pitches like this are good for the game?

"They're great for batters because we get big scores but as far as Test cricket is concerned, it's not ideal but it's what we've got to deal with, and we've got to try and find ways of taking 20 wickets."
