Defender Stefan Bell scored twice as Mainz beat Schalke 2-0 on Friday (24th April) in the German Bundesliga.

Schalke visited Mainz in the Bundesliga on Friday looking to strengthen their position in fifth in the table and remain on course for qualification for next season's Europa League.

They dominated early on with home goalkeeper Loris Karius saving well from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

And Karius made another fine save to deny Joel Matip after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had headed down Jefferson Farfan's corner.

But it was Mainz who took the lead in the 28th minute - the visitors failed to clear Johannes Geis' corner and Stefan Bell prodded the ball home.

Three minutes later, Bell rose above Matip to head another Geis corner powerfully into the net despite Ralf Faehrmann getting a hand to it.

Both sides had chances in the second half and Schalke substitute Julian Draxler hit the bar with a powerful effort from long range late on.

Mainz won 2-0 to move up to eighth in the table. Roberto Di Matteo's Schalke stay fifth but Augsburg only need a point at bottom club Hamburg on Saturday (25th April) to move above them.
