  • Intro:

Vice captain Joe Root, who tops England's run charts in the current Ashes series, acknowledged on Monday (27th July) that Ian Bell's place is under threat just like anybody else but hopes his teammate can shine at Edgbaston.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England:(On state of this Ashes series).

"Well I think... we've had a week off now and we've got a three-match series basically ahead of us. So it's sort of irrelevant what's gone, we can't do anything about it and we've got a very excitable bunch of players downstairs that are desperate to, you know, go out and show what we can do. You look at what we did at Cardiff, it was a great performance, but it's all about this week now and making sure that when we get an opportunity to get ahead in the game we take it with both hands, and we know that feeling that we had at Lord's and we'll try and make it... put it back into Australia."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England:(On whether Ian Bell is playing for his England place).

"I think every international player is playing for their place at all times. Obviously some guys are scoring more consistently than others - but Ian's record is fantastic, he's playing at his home ground. It's obviously an Ashes series which... last time in England he was outstanding, so I'm sure that he'll be dying to get back out there and lay a big marker down and sort of take some form into the rest of the summer."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England:(On suggestion he is now the 'prize' England wicket, and how he is adjusting to this).

"I wouldn't say that. I think it's about making sure that I've got stuff in place to combat the way that they try and get me out. And I'm making sure I do my practice over the next two days, I've done some stuff previously this week. So, you know, regardless of how they look to get me out I've just got to make sure that I go about my business the right way, and I look to score as many runs and just sort of play the situation and play the ball on its merit."
