Monk: 'Swansea can't be favourites against Manchester United'

  • After twice beating Manchester United last season in the English Premier League, Swansea City manager Garry Monk looks ahead to Sunday's (30 August) clash between the two sides at the Liberty Stadium.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English): Garry Monk, Swansea City manager:

"It would be very hard to ever be favourites against Manchester United. We are playing the history they have, the squad that they have. They are extremely difficult games, we performed very well in those games you mentioned last season (Swansea beat Manchester United 2-1 twice in EPL last season), but it's another year, it's a different prospect, they've added a lot of extra quality to their squad, depth to their squad. We are going to be facing a very tough United side with world-class players, so I think we go in as the underdogs at home against them, and we'll be looking to put a performance on in front of our own crowd here at the Liberty Stadium. It's one we are looking forward to of course, and there's good motivation for the players after last season's performances against them, and we'll look to use that as the motivation going into this game."

SOUNDBITE (English): Garry Monk, Swansea City manager (on Manchester Utd striker Wayne Rooney):

"He scored some good goals midweek (hat-trick against Club Brugge in Wednesday's (26 August) Champions League qualifier) and he'll be confident coming here, so it's something that we have to make sure that we can try and nullify, or do the best we can to stop them adding any more goals to their tally and try and impose ourselves. The main thing for us in this type of game is that we concentrate on ourselves. Of course we respect the strengths that Man United have, but we have strengths ourselves and that's what we concentrate on."

SOUNDBITE (English): Garry Monk, Swansea City manager:

"Of course, I think we will have to produce probably our best performance of the season to make sure we come away with the right result. They will come here full of confidence and looking to carry on the momentum that they have started the season with (seven points from three games), so it's important that we try to battle our way into it and show our quality as well."
