van der Sar: " I am looking forward to the Europa League"

Saturday, August 29 2015 by SNTV
  • Reaction from Ajax, Monaco and Celtic officials after the UEFA Europa League draw in Monte Carlo, Monaco

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Edwin van der Sar, Ajax marketing director and former goalkeeper:

(On being drawn in Group A with Celtic, Fenerbahce and Molde).

"If you see there are nice teams - Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool and in our group Celtic. We played them two years ago in the Champions League and they were nice and exciting matches. Celtic have great supporters, Ajax have a great following and the same for Fenerbahce. And Molde I don't know a lot about, only that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was their manager four or five years ago, but no I am looking forward to playing those matches in the Europa League."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Vadim Vasilyev, Monaco Vice President:

(On being drawn in Group J with Tottenham Hotspur, Anderlecht and Qarabag).

"We are very happy because there were critics that said ok if we go to the Europa League it's not that interesting, it's not as competitive as the Champions League and this is really a very strong group and I think we are ready, but it will be difficult and it will be a great competition to go and compete against Tottenham, Anderlecht and this new team from Azerbaijan."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ronnie Hawthorne, Celtic head of safety security and operations:

(Q: It's a tough group with Ajax, Fenerbahce and Molde, is this a chance to shake off the disappointment of not reaching the Champions League?)

"Well you're right, but I think we shake off the disappointment of not qualifying for the Champions League and you look forward and really in terms of football there is a lot of good football in Group A so we're hoping that's attractive to people and they enjoy the competition. I know we'll put our normal preparation in and hopefully we'll have some success in progressing."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ronnie Hawthorne, Celtic head of safety security and operations:

(Q: There has been a lot of question over Ronnie Delia's record in Europe, is this a good chance to prove his pedigree?)

"Well I'm sure he takes every match that way to show that he is capable of, what our players are capable of and he certainly won't shrink from the task that's for certain."

Q: Do you think some of the criticism he has received has been unfair?

"Well I don't think it is easy to qualify for the Champions League and the qualifiers, the three qualifiers that we have to face and have done for some time now, is very difficult to get through. So there is always going to be those who criticise and also those who are more positive and we'll look ahead with some relish at this competition we're now in."
