  • SuggestedLeadIn: USA's Aires Merritt on his 'proudest moment' winning a bronze at the World Championships in Beijing, China on Friday (28 August) despite his struggles with his kidney.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Aires Merritt, 110 metres hurdles bronze medallist:

"The medal here meant more than my gold medal in London because I was able to persevere through something that my doctors thought was impossible. They don't even know how I am able to run let alone compete at the World Championships. I am just thrilled and excited. And so blessed to be here."

SOUNDBITE (English) Aires Merritt, 110 metres hurdles bronze medallist:

(Question: Is this your proudest moment?)

"To be honest it is. It is the thing I am most proud of. To get a bronze medal, despite having kidney disorder, despite feeling completely exhausted. I am just plastered right now. I feel horrible. But God ran my race for me. He pushed me to that line and I just so happy to get a bronze medal. To run a season's best. I am so happy."

SOUNDBITE (English) Aires Merritt, 110 metres hurdles bronze medallist:

    (On Sergey Shubenkov).

"Of course. I am so happy for him. He has worked very hard and he's very talented. And we have another member of the sub-13 club. And so that is very exciting. As you can tell, the hurdle event has transcended itself. We have seen more sub-13 performances this decade than we have seen in history. There has been so many sub-13 performances which makes our event just that more exciting. So I am so happy for him. And he deserves the win here tonight."
