USA cruise past Australia in Volleyball World Championhips opener

  • SuggestedLeadIn: USA opened their account at the men's World Cup in Japan with a comfortable 3-0 win over Australia on Tuesday (8th September).

Script: On the opening day of the men's volleyball World Cup in Japan, the USA took on Australia.

There was little to choose between the two sides in the opening set in Hiroshima, with the lead changing hands several times.

But it was the Americans who just shaded it - a Matt Anderson ace wrapping it up 25-23.

And in the second, the Australians' resistance crumbled, as the USA opened out a ten point lead, before a David Lee's block saw them win 25-12.

The third set followed a similar pattern - a triple US block sealing the win 25-15.

Next up for the USA will be an encounter with hosts Japan on Wednesday.

And there's plenty to play for - the top two from the 12 team tournament will earn a spot at next year's Olympics.
