Germany's Andrea Petkovic was Eugenie Bouchard's first opponent since her return to action after sustaining concussion.

At the China Open, Petkovic hit a winner in the opening game of her first set, with a volley to the far corner that Bouchard didn't chase.

Petkovic went on to take the set 6-2 as Bouchard let the ball fall into the net.

The German had few problems wrapping up the first set 6-2, but Bouchard showed signs of encouragement in the second.

However, with the score at 1-1, Bouchard had to stop. Suffering from dizziness, she retired from play teary-eyed.

The issue started when she slipped her head in the locker room at the US Open. She has subsequently missed out on competitions at Tokyo and Wahu.

It's been a difficult very year for the 21 year old, Having reached the Wimbeldon final last summer, she was set to play the best tennis of her career this year. But so far she has fallen from 5th ranking down to 38th.
