WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic stayed in the hunt for a place at the WTA Finals Singapore with a hard-fought first round win over Madison Brengle at the China Open in Beijing.

A good run in the Chinese capital will bring Singapore within touching distance for the leading contenders in the remaining qualification berths, and Bencic took the first step towards that goal with a scrappy 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 win over Brengle.

With 1,000 points on offer to the champion, Beijing represents the last opportunity to make up significant ground on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
Bencic is currently in the thick of the hunt for a spot at the season-ending showpiece, trailing current No.8 Karolina Pliskova by less than 200 points.

Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland meanwhile, came from a set down to beat Germany's Mona Barthel 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Te world number two kept the errors to a minimum - racking up 13 fewer than Barthel in the match.

Radwanska won this tournament in 2011 and will play Madison Keys in the third round.

Former World No.2 Svetlana Kuznetsova fought hard to come through in three tight sets against Sloane Stephens.

She recovered from a set down to beat the unseeded American, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.

Up next for the Russian is the winner of the match between No.6 seed Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams.
