Germany's Angelique Kerber cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Dominika Cibulkova in the second round of the China Open in Beijing on Tuesday (6th October).

Script: Angelique Kerber remains on course to play in the season finale WTA Finals in Singapore as she moved into the third round of the China Open on Tuesday.

The German got off to a superb start against Dominika Cibulkova, taking the first set 6-1.

And in the second, clinched a crucial break of serve to win by a a 6-1, 6-4 margin.

Kerber has won four WTA titles already this season and will now take on Caroline Wozniacki.

And in the clash between two former world number ones - Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams, the American looked in control early on with a break of serve to lead 4-3.

But her Serbian opponent promptly fought back and later went on to take the first-set tie-break by seven points to three.

Ivanovic powered ahead once more in the second, winning six games in a row to run away with the match, 7-6(3), 6-2.

She will face former world number two Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round. Already Ivanovic leads their head-to-head 10-3, victorious in their last four meetings.
