Kennaugh retains yellow jersey

  • John Murphy won the third stage of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in a photo finish ahead of Niccolo Bonifazio in Australia on Saturday (6th February) - however, Peter Kennaugh retained the overall lead as he holds a 13-second advantage over his Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome.

The penultimate stage of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour took place on Sunday as the riders travelled the 146.1-kilometre distance from Traralgon to Leongatha.

After yesterday's frantic attempts to get into the breakaway, Saturday was more subdued with Morgan Smith, Daniel Bonello, Thomas Hubbard and Ben Hill forcing a move off the front of the peloton.

Orica-GreenEdge and Team Sky kept the pace high in the Peloton and by the time they passed through Inverloch for the first sprint point, they were one minute and 35 seconds behind.

The break was caught inside the final eight kilometres with Orica-GreenEdge pushing hard.

However, UnitedHealthcare came to the front to drop off John Murphy into the sprint, who repaid his team-mates effort by delivering their first victory of the 2016 season to take the stage.

Niccolo Bonifazio finished second with Steele von Hoff third.

Peter Kennaugh still leads the overall classifications with Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome remaining 13 seconds behind with one stage remaining.

The final stage takes place tomorrow with Kennaugh the man to beat.
