Dutch underdog stuns Kuznetsova to reach Fed Cup semis

Monday, February 08 2016 by SNTV
  • The Netherlands beat Russia 3-1 on Sunday (7th February) to reach the semi-finals.

Kiki Bertens took on Svetlana Kuznetsova, knowing that a win would be enough to secure an unlikely Fed Cup win over Russia.

The Netherlands' won both rubbers on the opening day on Saturday.

That meant that Kuznetsova then had to win, but she was blown away by the world number 106 in the opening set.

Bertens was giving Kuznetsova - ranked 17 in the world - the run-around, and clinched the break in the fourth game.

She closed it out with ease 6-1, but her Russian opponent improved in the second set and held serve in the opening exchanges.

But Bertens found more to break in the seventh game and took victory on her second match point for a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Bertens has lost just once in 14 Fed Cup singles matches as she steered her country through to the semi-finals.
