Buttler must 'stay true to himself' - Prior

Friday, February 12 2016 by SNTV
  • Former England wicket keeper Matt Prior discusses Jos Buttler and the art of wicket keeping in a chat with SNTV on Thursday (11th February).

SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Prior, Founder and CEO of One Pro Cycling (asked if he thinks the art of wicket keeping is dying in cricket)

"I think gone are the days when you have a natural wicketkeeper who can't bat. That has changed completely. But I believe it's far easier to create a fantastic wicketkeeper than it is a batsman who can score hundreds. The batsman side of things, I think, is something you either have or don't have. Obviously you can work on it, you can train on it, you can get better but a batsman is a batsman. Whereas a wicketkeeper you can really mould and train, I suppose I'm a good example of that!"

SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Prior, Founder and CEO of One Pro Cycling (asked if he thinks Jos Buttler can become a Test regular)

"Anyone that bats like he bats in one-day cricket can make it work in Test cricket. He needs to find the tempo that he wants to bat at. I think sometimes he gets stuck with thinking, 'Am I meant to block, am I meant to leave it, am I meant to attack it?'. The sooner he can find that...I believe he has to stay true to himself and play in a Test match like he would do in a one-day game. People have to accept that sometimes he's going to play a rash shot and nick off or smash one straight to cover but there will be another time when he scores 120 off 80 balls and wins a test match for the team."
