Yego: 'Kenya must be compliant but doping is a menace'

  • Kenya's world champion javelin thrower Julius Yego urged the Kenyan government on Wednesday (6 April) to fast track the implementation of the anti-doping bill before the country is banned for not complying with WADA anti-doping regulations ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

SOUNDBITE(English) Julius Yego, Javelin World Champion

"We do not want a situation whereby, maybe some people they are saying that maybe Kenya will be banned. I want when I'm competing outside everybody will know that Kenya is a compliant country, its not like some countries whereby there have been issues of non-compliance."

SOUNDBITE(English) Julius Yego, World commonwealth and Africa javelin champion.

"Doping is a menace and its a worldwide thing, its not only Kenya and I saw that bill and its a nice thing so if there will be amendments, there will be and that's what we want. I saw some legislatures saying that the bill did not meet the requirements of WADA. It was approved by WADA so I don't see why people are saying this thing is not ok. It is ok. If there will be anything that they think should be amended then I am sure they will amend it after the bill has gone through so that Kenya remains a nice country, to remain with its image, a nice image of Kenya. Kenyans are not dopers, we are not dopers. The few elements that we have, any other country have had the same thing."
