  • In Berlin, Germany for the Laureus World Sports Awards, Australian former Olympics 400 metres champion Cathy Freeman on Sunday (18th April) spoke about doping in athletics.

SOUNDBITE (English) Cathy Freeman, former Australian athlete:

"I just find it disappointing whenever people feel that there is always a shortcut to realising your own potential. I think that is generally speaking in any sport whether it business or any case because it is a moral issue for me personally. However, there has got to be trust put back in by the powers that be that control that space moving forward."

SOUNDBITE (English) Cathy Freeman, former Australian athlete:

"There are clean champions out there and there is always going to be generally speaking, one or two bad eggs so to speak that will always tarnish the other champions' reputations. That's part of the shame of it I believe but I certainly an advocate for clean athletics."

SOUNDBITE (English) Cathy Freeman, former Australian athlete:

"There is always an idea of speculation around our champions which is probably a bit of a tragedy but there is also that side to my nature that believes in pure human performance. I'm hopeful and I have faith in humanity."
