Thursday, May 05 2016 by SNTV
  • The defending champion and number five seed Petra Kvitova crashed out of the Madrid Open in Spain on Wednesday (4th May), following a 6-3, 6-4 third round defeat by Daria Gavrilova of Australia.

Petra Kvitova was wary of the seeds dropping like flies at the Madrid Open this week.

Garbine Muguruza and top seed Agnieska Radwanska had already disappeared.

The World No.6 was facing rising Australian star, Daria Gavrilova, and Kvitova was in danger early on.

The 22-year-old Australian playing some clever tennis, taking the opening set 6-3.

Even since Kvitova's Wimbledon title of 2014, the Czech player has never quite hit those devastating heights.

And Gavrilova had previous with Kvitova, having knocked her out of the Aussie Open earlier this year.

The Australian continued to defy Kvitova with her backhand, and one of the Czech's 30 unforced errors cost her the match.

Gavrilova will next face Louisa Chirico of the United States, the world number 130.

Chirico made it through to the last eight after her scheduled opponent, number four seed Victoria Azarenka, withdrew with a back injury.
