  • Third seed Angelique Kerber was defeated in three sets by Kiki Bertens in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday (24th May).

While, Eugenie Bouchard crushed Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-2.

And former champion, Francesca Schiavone, lost in the first round at her last French Open appearance.

Angelique Kerber came into the French Open fearing the worst after early exits in Rome and Madrid.

And that was compounded with shoulder problems in her first round match with the dangerous Kiki Bertens.

Bertens won last week in Nuremberg starting from the qualifying rounds.

The Dutchwoman won the first set, before the number 3 seed Kerber hit back.

Bertens then went 5-3 ahead in the decider, and despite wasting two match points, she came through on the third.

Camilia Giorgi up next for the ever-improving Bertens.

Eugenie Bouchard had a relatively comfortable afternoon against Laura Siegumend.

Winning in straight sets and could play Monica Niculescu in the next round.

And for 2010 champion, Francesca Schiavone, there was to be no fairytale ending.

She was beaten in the first round by Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 6-4 - in what she was informed by tournament organisers was her last French Open.
