Ethiopian athletes test positive for meldonium

Sunday, June 05 2016 by SNTV
  • Suspended Ethiopian athletes have tested positive for the newly-banned substance meldonium, the national track team doctor said on Saturday (4th June.)

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr. Ayalew Tilahun, Ethiopian athletics team doctor:

"We have got six athletes under custody. We have finished every evaluation on our part. We have submitted every information to IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations‎and) anti-doping and medical commission. Now what we are waiting is the decision from IAAF and WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency). We don't have any rumours, but like everyone of you we have got information that about meldonium. Four of our athletes were caught taking meldonium."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Rob Koehler, WADA Deputy Director General:

"The first thing we required is more testing. They were already starting to do education and prevention, but more testing was needed in the country, more money was needed to support the NADO (National Anti-Doping Organisation.) That is all now in place. The things aren't finished. They need to continue to develop, they need to continue with training, they need to continue to upscale. But currently we are pleased with the development, we are pleased with the direction and we are pretty happy with, in a very short period of time, the investment that is put in to anti-doping to ensure that testing was happening on all Ethiopian athletes and to protect the clean athletes."
