Farah wins the 3000 metres in Birmingham

  • Kirani James, Mo Farah and Asbel Kiprop among the winners at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham on Sunday (5th June).

    The latest round of Diamond League athletics took place in Birmingham as several top names continue to hone their performances ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio later this summer.

    There was plenty for the home crowd to cheer for when Mo Farah took to the track for the 3000 metres.

    The double Olympic Champion dominated the race to win in a world leading and national record time of 7:32.92.

    The women's 400 metres was as competitive as anticipated.

    It was Floria Guei of France who took the gold medal with a storming finish that saw her home in a personal best time of 50.84 seconds.

    Christine Day of Jamaica was second while Australian Morgan Mitchell came third.

    2008 Olympic Champion Christine Ohuruogu was unable to produce her trademark finish and took seventh place in 52.40 seconds, nearly three seconds off her personal best.

    US athlete Marquise Goodwin won the men's long jump with a leap of 8.42 metres.

    Compatriot Michael Hartfield was second while Fabrice Lapierre of Australia was third.

    Defending Olympic Champion Greg Rutherford finished fifth after suffering with a neck problem.

    English Gardner of the USA saw off a formidable challenge from Dafne Schippers to win the women's 100 metres in a time of 11.02 seconds.
