Messi announces international retirement

  • File footage of Lionel Messi training with Argentina during the Copa America Centenario in the United States.

Lionel Messi retired from international football after missing a penalty as Argentina lost a shoot-out to Chile in the Copa America final on Sunday.

The Barcelona forward has decided to quit without winning a major trophy with his country.

Following the defeat at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Messi told the world he wouldn't be carrying on.

At just 29, Messi is Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer with 55 goals in 112 matches, representing his country in six major tournaments

His lack of success with the national team is in stark contrast to his domestic career where he's won 28 trophies, including eight La Liga titles and four champions league trophies all with Barcelona - the club he'll return to next season.
