Reaction from the first round of the Open Championship

Friday, July 15 2016 by SNTV
  • Final reaction from the first round of the 2016 Open Championship on Thursday (14th July) as Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson and Adam Scott were among the late finishes trying to keep pace with leader Phil Mickelson.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Zach Johnson (USA), four-under:(On the response from the crowd to him)

"Oh, it felt great, yeah. These crowds over here are just so warm and welcoming regardless if you're a past champion, defending champion or from the other end of the world. They're just great in that respect. Wise, I would say, very knowledgeable, and just appreciate certainly us being here, but quality golf. Just tremendous, tremendous fans."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Adam Scott (AUS), two-under:(On his first round)

"Absolutely, I just could of played my way out of it today. Especially with Phil going low and giving himself a bit of buffer and a bit of comfort for a couple days for him to play quite free. I didn't want to be coming from over-par starting the last three rounds and playing even with pressure to make the cut. Tomorrow I want to get out, conditions could be tough, and grind my way around tomorrow and lose any ground on the leader."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin Kaymer (Ger), five-under:(On the fact he could have scored even better)

"Yeah, we had a few lip-outs here and there. But on the other end I made a couple of very nice up-and-downs. I was in the rough a couple times too from the tee, and I made par, even sometimes a birdie. So I'd rather focus on the good things that happened than the things that did not go in."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Sullivan (Eng), four-under:(Being the leading Englishman in the field)

"Massively, it's great. Just happy to be up there in an Open Championship and I want to give myself the best chance of trying to lift that claret jug and try and take it out of the Americans' hands for a change."
