Stenson leads by one over Mickelson at the Open

Sunday, July 17 2016 by SNTV
  • Henrik Stenson holds a one shot lead over Phil Mickelson after the third round of the Open Championship at Royal Troon on Saturday (16th July).

Henrik Stenson finished second to Phil Mickelson in the Open in 2013 at Muirfield.

This time around, the Swede appears determined to reverse that result.

Stenson is yet to win a major but will head into the final day with a one-shot lead over American Mickelson after a three-under round of 68.

He hit three birdies in his first four holes before picking up bogies on the 6th and 7th.

They were to be the only shots the 40 year-old dropped all day, and birdies at 14 and at 17 ensured he moved ahead of Mickelson to lead at 12-under.

Five time major champion Mickelson also played some impressive golf in what were windy conditions on the Scottish west coast.

He was one-under at the turn but had a frustrating back nine - picking a birdie on the 13th before dropping a shot at the next, a sequence he repeated at 16 and 17.

He closed at one-under for the day, 11-under overall.

That's five shots clear of third placed Bill Haas - he went around 2-under.

Meanwhile Andrew 'Beef' Johnston entertained the crowds. The laid back Englishman hit the shot of the day at 13th to chip in, and sits alone in fourth after a round of 70 on 5-under.

Stenson has finished in the top three of a major nine times, he'll be hoping to finally put an end to that streak on Sunday...
