Berardelli lawyer says doping claims are 'false'

Tuesday, July 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Athletics coach Claudio Berardelli appeared in court in Nairobi on Monday and will answer charges related to doping at the beginning of August.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Julius Kemboi, defence lawyer:
"The only thing I can tell you of course is that this narrative that Claudio or his assistant are responsible for the doping in the country is a false narrative. The prosecution is better advised to speak to Athletics Kenya or the IAAF where they can get the lead on who actually are responsible for doping in the country."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Julius Kemboi, defence lawyer:
"We are the only country in the world that takes the coaches of our best athletes and puts them in this process just before the Olympics. I mean you've seen already in Monaco that our athletes were not doing very well. The fact that they are being arraigned, these people are being told to go to the police almost on daily basis it is disrupting their training programmes. So obviously it's not far-fetched to imagine that if this continues, we will perform very dismally. And you know athletics is probably the only sport other than rugby that we are doing well in now. If we are going to do this kind of business of disrupting the training programmes, pretending that we are investigating doping we will reap the fruits (sic), we will destroy one more successful sport to the detriment of our young people."
