Team GB announce rugby sevens squads

Wednesday, July 20 2016 by SNTV
  • Team GB announced their squads for the Olympic rugby sevens on Tuesday (19th July).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Tom Mitchell, captain (on the difference between captaining England and Team GB)

"Our jobs as captain, I speak for myself, every time we are given the responsibility and the honour of captaining our home nations (our job) is to go out there and get the best out of the other players, try and lead by example and also run things during the tournament as well. So in that respect, it's exactly the same. I guess one difference for me personally is just the scale of it. As Emily touched upon, the scale of the Olympics is like nothing else we've ever experienced and the honour of leading Team Gb is just that much greater."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Emily Scarratt (on playing for Team GB rather than England)

"I think ultimately the processes will be the same. I'm captaining largely the same squad, in what's going to be the same in terms of a rugby tournament. But I think that pulling on a team GB jersey will be immensely special and knowing that you're running out and leading the team will be even more so so it's going to be a really really proud moment and hopefully something that you can look back on with really fond memories.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Bennett (on being selected for the squad)

"It's massive for me. It's a huge achievement for anyone to go to an Olympics and to be part of the wider GB squad, it's going to be amazing. I was lucky enough to part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games squad for Scotland and it was a completely different experience to anything that I had been involved in in rugby so I'm pretty sure that this is going to be exactly the same if not more of a challenge."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Amy Wilson-Hardy (on the strength of the women's competition)

"Definitely. I think the beauty of sevens is that anyone can win on the day and there is some really tough competition out there but Team GB are definitely going out there all guns blazing and hoping to come home with gold."
