  • Russian Olympic team coach Valentina Radionenko said on Thursday (21st July) that she is disappointed with CAS' (Court for Arbitration in Sport) decision to uphold a ban on the country's athletics team from the Rio Games

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Valentina Radionenko, Russian Olympic team coach (on CAS' decision to uphold the ban on the Russia Olympic athletics team from competing at the Rio Games):

"It is disappointing. We have been waiting for the verdict and we were hoping that the athletes would be allowed to compete, because all these people who will not be allowed, they have never even participated in any doping scandals. Never. We are following all other sports, and it is very disappointing."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Valentina Radionenko, Russian Olympic team coach:

"This decision is equal to insanity, not to allow a country (Russia) that is one of the leaders of world sport. That this country can be ignored, I think this is a crime. This is a crime against the sport of records."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Valentina Radionenko, Russian Olympic team coach:

"We continued to train when all these scandals began. I wouldn't say the athletes are isolated from the information, none of the athletes never ever came and said: "What if we don't go?" We haven't raised this subject. This has never been discussed. They had been training with even a higher eagerness."
