Mushtaq - Pakistan bowlers must get back to basics

Saturday, July 23 2016 by SNTV
  • Mohammad Amir and Rahat Ali took two wickets apiece on a tough day for the Pakistan attack. Alastair Cook celebrated his 50th game in charge with his 29th Test century (105) and Joe Root, with whom Cook shared a second wicket partnership worth 185, was 141 not out at the close of play, to put England in charge.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mushtaq Ahmed, Pakistan spin bowling coach:

(on the Pakistan bowling attack, particularly Yasir Shah)

"Sometimes that expectation does actually put you a little bit more under pressure and you try to deliver the same performance and sometimes I believe you start losing your basics and the simple things that he did in the last Test match. That happens, you know, like that's why the strikers, the bowlers always do that, because when the expectation comes to them and they try to deliver the same thing, but I think sometimes if you forgot the basics, you know, first day pitch, you know, what role Yasir has to do, because he was getting lots of wickets last... he got ten wickets last game, so I think that momentum went through and he forgot the basics, so that hasppens."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mushtaq Ahmed, Pakistan spin bowling coach:

    (on leg spinner Yasir Shah)

"Yes, exactly. I think he was not... the ball wasn't coming (out) nicely from his hand, we did discuss, but you know, sometimes during a game, it's very hard for a coach to tell you what to do, but we have a good communication and I sent him a couple of messages and because the ball was coming more flatter, less spin on the ball, so on a first day pitch, the margin for error for a leg spinner against good players like Joe Root and (Alastair) Cook, very small margin for error. You've got to bowl, I always believe that as a good bowler, you've got to bowl good overs against good players to get them out. We didn't do that today, but we will come out tomorrow and he's a strong guy, he wasn't hiding, so that's a positive thing as well."
