Straight sets win for Haase to reach Swiss Open final

  • Unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase reached the final of the Swiss Open in Gstaad on Saturday (23rd July), following a 7-6(5), 7-6(2) victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, the number eight seed.

A big game for both Robin Haase and Paul-Henri Mathieu in the semi-finals of the Swiss Open.

Just as play was due to get under way, the heavens opened.

And it was a long wait for the pair as they went off court for over 2hours.

Back they came in beautiful Alpine sunshine for the semi-final match up in Gstaad.

Both players had dropped just one set each through to the semi-final stages of the ATP 250 event, and it proved a tight game in the opening set.

Neither player has won an ATP title since 2012, with Haase the last to do so.

Haase took it though on the tiebreak, 7-5.

Into the second set, the Dutchman was pressing the eight seed for a break of serve, yet Mathieu stayed strong.

So that meant another tiebreak to decide the second.

Haase though put some booming serves down and comfortably took it 7-2.

So the unseeded Dutchman moves into the final and will play top seed Feliciano Lopez on Sunday.
