Asher-Smith welcomes Murray as Team GB flag bearer

Thursday, August 04 2016 by SNTV
  • Team GB sprinters Dina Asher-Smith, Adam Gemili and Chijindu Ujah are delighted that Andy Murray has been selected to carry the flag for Great Britain at Friday's (5th August) Rio 2016 opening ceremony.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dina Asher-Smith, Team GB sprinter (on whether Andy Murray is the right athlete to carry the GB flag):

"Yes, I think he is. He has been so successful, I think he won the last Olympics, he's won Wimbledon so yes, he's one of our sporting icons right now. That's really good, I'm really happy to hear that."

SOUNDBITE (English) Adam Gemili, Team GB sprinter:

"He (Andy Murray) is a fantastic competitor and a fantastic athlete and he's a great role model for a lot of athletes. I think there were a lot of options that they (British Olympic Association) could have picked, I think Jo Pavey (long-distance runner) could also have done a great job - a five-time Olympian. But Andy Murray, yes, an Olympic gold medallist and he's won so many accolades that he will really hopefully go and inspire the team like Chris Hoy did in 2012."

SOUNDBITE (English) Chijindu Ujah, Team GB sprinter:

"I did actually think it was going to be him (Andy Murray) being the flag bearer. He's such an inspiration to sport worldwide, he's just won Wimbledon this year, and I think he's a respectable person to be a flag bearer. He's achieved a lot so far."
