Monday, August 08 2016 by SNTV
  • Australia's Nick Kyrgios won his second ATP Tour title at the Atlanta Open on Sunday (7th August), beating top seed John Isner 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4).

Nick Kyrgios won the Atlanta Open on Sunday, beating three-time champion and top seed John Isner in straight-sets.

The controversial Australian raced ahead in the first set tie break, producing a superb backhand winner in the process - the humid conditions clearly taking their toll on the 31-year old American Isner.

And Kyrgios crunched down an ace, to take the breaker 7-3.

The second set was equally engaging, with Kyrgios displaying the full creative range of his shot selection. But Isner held firm on his own serve to force a tie-break, and an uncharacteristic double fault gave Kyrgios a 7-6 7-6 victory.

With the trophy safely in his hands the new Atlanta Open champion reflected on his victory:

SOUNDBITE (English) Nick Kyrgios, 2016 Atlanta Open champion:

"I just want to thank John (Isner), he's probably one of my best friends on tour - I don't have too many friends at the moment, but he's one of them. He's been a good guy to me and he's been pretty much unbeatable here. You know I took it off him (the trophy), he's had it a bit too long. And his team as well, they're great guys as well."

The victory assures Kyrgios of a new career-high ranking of 16th in the world.
