Meilutyte left to wonder what when wrong

Wednesday, August 10 2016 by SNTV
  • Lithuanian swimmer Ruta Meilutyte reflects on her disappointing seventh place finish in the women's 100 metre breast-stroke, and argues that those who have previously been found guilty of doping shouldn't be allowed to compete in the Olympics.

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ruta Meilutyte:

"Yes I think it was very brave of Lilly (King). Just after she became a (Olympic) Champion to speak out and be brave enough to show her opinion and I think she said what we all think and yes I don't think that Yuliya (Efimova) was supposed to be there, just like any other athlete who has been tested positive for doping shouldn't be in the Olympics so I guess that answers your question but I think the frustration is for the clean swimmers that we want to keep this sport clean and race in a field where everyone is equal and works very hard to just be there and compete so it's never nice to have drug cheats mixed in that, in the mix with the clean people."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ruta Meilutyte:

"I'm feeling good but I didn't get much sleep last night but I think there is a mixture of things that didn't go quite as well as I would have wanted yesterday. It's hard to point out the majority of things and it just didn't go the way I wanted it to go but that's the sport and I think I just wasn't at my best yesterday and the others girls were better but I'm very happy for Lilly for becoming a Champion and showing a great result."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Ruta Meilutyte:

"I haven't thought about it much. I think I'm just going to take some time off and just really relax and not think about anything for the moment. I think that Tokyo is definitely on my mind but I would like to just have some time off and not think about swimming for a little while."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jon Rudd, Ruta Meilutyte's coach:

"There's a number of possibilities. I think, from my perspective, Ruta felt some pressure at this event. Being the defending Champion is a little bit different to coming to an Olympic Games at 15 years of age, not being expected to win a medal or even expected to make the final and then when you come as defending Champion it's a completely different feeling so there is some tension and some anxiety in the swim and we also must look at the coaching plan as well as to what we have done in the pool and what we've done in the gym and how we did the preparation into the competition as well. There is maybe something here, but again it is something that I need to discuss with Ruta first because we've not had any time to do that."
