Pool in Rio turns green!

Friday, August 12 2016 by SNTV
  • The water at Rio's Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre turned green due to a sudden decrease in alkalinity levels, the head of the Rio 2016 organising committee said on Wednesday

SOUNDBITE (English): Mario Andrada, spokesperson for Rio 2016 organising committee

"The water conditions at the Maria Lenk stadium are monitoring every day. Mid-afternoon there was a sudden decrease in the alkalinity of the diving pool first and that's the main reason for the colour (+++AUDIO GLITCH AS INCOMING+++) has been changed, this change of chemical conditions in the water also produced other difference. The water polo synchronised swimming pool, the bigger pool, is also being affected in the same way. pH and chlorine levels in both pools are within the required standards. We have treated both pools during the night and the alkalinity levels have already improved. We expect the colour to be back to blue very shortly."

SOUNDBITE (English): Roseline Filion, Canadian diver

"It was definitely a surprise the day of our event to see the colour of the water changing, during the training Meaghan (Benfeito) asked around 'is it just me or is the water a little green'? And it got greener as the day went on, our first dive in the competition I was trying really hard to hold myself from laughing because when we got to the end of the tower I looked down and it was really, really green but we came here with a mindset of expecting the unexpected, the water could have been orange, purple, it didn't matter, it was not going to stop us from performing well and we actually took advantage of it."
