  • Germany Olympic canoeing coach Stefen Henze is fighting for his life in a Rio de Janeiro hospital after being involved in a car accident on Friday

SOUNDBITE: (German) Michael Vesper, Chef de Mission of the German Olympic Team:

"Our entire team is of course affected by this terrible accident and shocked by the serious injuries that Stefan Henze has suffered. Everyone is shocked and praying and hoping that he will get well soon."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Michael Vesper, Chef de Mission of the German Olympic Team:

"We have of course also talked with the relatives of Stefan Henze. They are currently on the way to Rio de Janeiro."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Bernd Wolfahrt, German Olympic Team's doctor:

"The entire rescue chain has worked extremely fast one must say. (After the accident) he was immediately brought to the next hospital nearby. There he was then stabilised and completely checked. All this happened in a time frame which could probably also not have been realised faster in Germany. The result of the checks (examinations) was a serious craniocerebral and he was then immediately transported to the next hospital here that is specialized on this kind of injuries."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Bernd Wolfahrt, German Olympic Team's doctor:

"It is a fact that there has been no change of the situation in the last 12 hours. This means that it is a very, very serious injury. It is a life-threatening condition, one must say this clearly."
