Gebrselassie supports lifetime doping bans

Monday, August 15 2016 by SNTV
  • Haile Gebrselassie said on Sunday (14th August) that doping cheats are tarnishing the sport both now and for the future.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Haile Gebrselassie, two-time 10,000 metre Olympic gold medal winner:  (on why doping bans should be permanent)

"I think, one thing I want to tell you about doping, the problem of doping (is that) when someone just after they banned him for four years, two years, he comes back (and) the athletes they don't take that as big (seriously) as just what they expect. Ok, you have this guy and after four years he comes back, if they found out about me, I would come back. It doesn't work like this. If they punish (an athlete), they punish. That's it. Otherwise we don't see athletics, clean athletics."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Haile Gebrselassie, two-time 10,000 metre Olympic gold medal winner:  (on the impact of doping on future generations)

"It's important (to clean up the sport) for the new generation. With doping, people think 'oh, it's money. Oh he's taken it and he wins this much money because of doping or, he's taken all the gold medals from Rio'. I don't care about that. I care about the millions of youngsters who are following in the footsteps of those people like the ones they watch, the ones they want to be."
