Japan basketball 'uniquely quick' - USA coach

Tuesday, August 16 2016 by SNTV
  • The USA women's basketball team trained and spoke on Monday (15th August) ahead of their Olympic quarter-final against Japan on Tuesday (16th August).

SOUNDBITE (English): Geno Auriemma, USA women's basketball team coach (On the knockout stage, and on the criticism of the dominance of USA women's basketball team as bad for the sport):

"Everything that we've done leading up to this point isn't going to help us Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. This starts all over now, and I don't anticipate Tuesday's game we win by fifty, like we did some of the other games. So I don't think I have to answer that question about whether we're good for the game or not."

SOUNDBITE (English): Geno Auriemma, USA women's basketball team coach:

"You watch Japan play on film, and they do things that I don't think there's another team in the world that plays the way they do. Plays as quickly as they play, plays as crisp together as they play, and does as many things that you have to defend as Japan does. I think they're unique in the world in that respect."

SOUNDBITE (English): Sue Bird, USA Women's basketball team (On their quarterfinal opponent Japan):

"We watched film of them today, and they were very impressive, they've got a lot of quickness in every position. They're a little undersized, but with that comes the quickness and it makes them very difficult to guard."
