Luis Enrique: Spanish Super Cup 'pointless trophy'

Friday, August 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique, plays down the significance of the Spanish Super Cup despite Arda Turan scoring two goals before Lionel Messi added a third as Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-0 on Wednesday (17 August) to win the Super Cup with a 5-0 victory on aggregate.

"We like all trophies. You can see the intensity of our players during the game. This is a Super Cup title that I don't understand why it was created. There are winners of the league and the Copa del Rey already. So I think it is completely senseless to play a Super Cup. And I say this now that we've won it. We've won the league and the Copa del Rey last season. Evidently there is business behind this competition but it is completely useless."

"I think Leo Messi will keep his spark during all of his life. He brings us superiority in the midfield and generates incredible scoring occasions. I think if you make him play as left or right back he would be the best in that position in the world. Because Leo Messi is football in its essence and it is irrelevant the position he plays. And I don't think that ageing will go against him. Because he is clever enough so the day his physical ability decreases he will be able to counterbalance it with his football intelligence."
